Oregon DOJ addresses rising hate crimes with ‘You Belong’ campaign
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A new campaign by the Oregon Department of Justice is sending a clear message to Oregonians of all backgrounds: “You belong.”
With hate crimes rising in Oregon, the department launched a campaign to support minority communities and spread awareness of the state’s non-emergency hotline for reporting bias and hate crimes.

Data from the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission shows a 25% increase in reports to the hotline between 2022 and 2023 as well as an alarming 229% increase since its launch in 2020.
“These targets are designed to isolate folks, to make people feel less than, and to keep it secret when people start to bring light to these kinds of problems,” Fay Stetz-Waters with the DOJ said. “We can use the data we collected. We can use the sources that have been shared to help support effective changes.”

The hotline provides trauma-informed support in over 240 languages. The department also takes reports online, and the website even has a chat feature.
