(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Opal Lee, known across the country as “Grandmother of Juneteenth”, visited Giberson Elementary on Friday, April 12, where she engaged with students, reading her book and responding to questions about her life and experiences.

Opal Lee, a retired educator and counselor, started to be called “Grandmother of Juneteenth” due to her efforts to promote awareness and advocate for Juneteenth’s recognition as a federal holiday in the United States.

Lee endeavors to mend the fractures that have divided the nation by promoting gestures of kindness between neighbors.

“I hope it comes across that we are the people who need to look after each other, and not just our family,” said Lee. “And it doesn’t mean you gotta do something gargantuan, it’s that… if you smile at a person, if you help an old lady like myself across the street, if you watch the children while the mother goes to the store, those things add up.”

Lee was a special guest at Pikes Peak State College on Thursday and had spoken about her experiences as an activist.
