Only in Denver: 5 photos that just about sum up the Mile High City

DENVER (KDVR) — Maybe it’s the high elevation or the abundant sunshine, but there’s something different about Denver.

From strange airport happenings to wildlife roaming around the metro, there aren’t many places that compare to the Mile High City.

There are never enough ways to describe this unique city, but a picture is worth a thousand words, and these photos just about sum up Denver.

Interstate 70 mayhem

Interstate 70 has seen all sorts of crazy, from multi-car pileups to people stuck in their cars overnight due to a road closure.

I-70 is actually known as one of the most hated roads in America, and the video above helps with that argument.

Photos: Snowy road conditions on Monday morning commute

Sunday’s snowstorm led to a dicey commute on Monday morning, but that didn’t stop Coloradans from braving the storm. Even though there were multiple slide-offs, low visibility and slick roads on Monday, the winter weather didn’t stop one person from hitting the highway on a scooter.

Broncos Country

Broncos Country is one fanbase that will go all-out on any occasion. One fan even wore a completely orange pom-pom suit to every single game he went to – and he was a season ticket holder for 15 years.

A few years ago, another diehard Broncos fan got Russell Wilson’s signature tattooed on his arm. It’s not unusual for Broncos fans to go all out for their team, but unfortunately for this fan, they might have to convert to the Pittsburgh Steelers, as Wilson just announced his signing with the team.

Odd wildlife interactions

Even though the Denver metro area is considered a metropolitan city, there’s still a lot of wildlife.

Whether it is a bison herd breaking free from a nearby pasture and blocking the road, to a Bighorn sheep stuck on a roof, Coloradans are bound to see some wildlife out and about.

One animal management officer in Arvada figured that out the hard way after four officers spent an hour trying to wrangle a runaway sheep. That is until Officer Bryce Denning caught the sheep mid-air.

Denver International Airport

From the 32-foot-tall horse statue with glowing red eyes to a cat being lost in the airport, the Denver International Airport has seen almost everything.

The pet was lost last summer after Ginger Thompson flew to Denver for a cat competition. On her flight home, a mishap with the cat carrier caused her beloved cat, Breezy, to fall between the airplane door and jet bridge and onto the tarmac.

Breezy was missing for over a day until Southwest employees found the kitty under a ramp area. The employees captured this picture before returning the cat to Thompson.

Ever-changing weather

There are only so many places in the world where the weather can go from 70 degrees one day to a snowstorm the next, and Denver is one of them. While the city boasts about “300 days of sunshine,” it’s also accompanied by some crazy weather.

While Denver has seen temperatures in the 60s this March, it also got a massive snowstorm — one of the largest storms Denver has seen in years.

Even this past week, a snowstorm hit the city on Sunday and Monday, but by the end of the week, it will be above 60 degrees.

Whether you’re a glorified local or just planning on visiting, nothing says “Denver” quite like odd interactions with wildlife and a new tattoo for the incoming quarterback.
