One shot, two stabbed at Downtown New Orleans shelter

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a shooting and stabbing in the downtown area Thursday afternoon.

According to officers, around 11:29 a.m. they were called to respond to a shooting at the Low Barrier Shelter in the 1500 block of Gravier Street.

An investigation revealed the suspect and victim were fighting when the suspect stabbed the victim. A security guard at the scene then shot the suspect.

All individuals were taken to a hospital for treatment. An update on their conditions was not released.

Officials with the Force Investigation Team (FIT), which is responsible for investigating all serious uses of force, were also on site of the incident.

NOPD said FIT is not investigating the shooting itself.

One person in the shelter said they heard the commotion and that there is a strict no-weapons policy for the residents.

WGNO crews attempted to contact the shelter but were unable to reach anyone.

Further details weren’t released. The NOPD is in the process of gathering evidence and information to determine a possible suspect and motive.
