One person hospitalized after CT teen in stolen car crashes into police cruisers, other motorists

One person was injured when a teen in a stolen car crashed into multiple police cruisers and other vehicles in Waterbury on Wednesday.

The teen was arrested after police spotted him driving in a stolen 2017 Volkswagen Touareg in the area of Midfield Drive and Meriden Road at 5 p.m., according to a statement issued by Lt. Ryan Bessette of the Waterbury Police Department.

The car, which had been reported stolen out of Stamford, was located during an investigation by members of the department’s Auto Theft Task Force and Crime Prevention Unit, Bessette said.

Police tried to pull the Volkswagen over, but the 16-year-old driver accelerated forward, struck a police cruiser and rear-ended a Hyundai Elantra, according to Bessette. The Volkswagen then struck another police cruiser and a Honda CR-V before coming to a stop.

The teen was taken into custody and charged with three counts of criminal attempt at assault on a police officer and a single count each of theft of a motor vehicle, second-degree criminal trover, interfering with an officer, reckless driving, evading responsibility, failure to obey an officer’s signal and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

According to Bessette, the driver of the Honda, a 35-year-old woman, was taken to an area hospital for minor injuries.

The occupants of the Hyundai were not injured, Bessette said.
