Update: 34-year-old man killed in crash into power line pole in Oakdale, CHP says

A crash into a power line pole on Yosemite Avenue in Oakdale on Saturday morning left the driver dead, according to the Modesto Fire Department. The crash happened north of Wakefield Drive and the victim was a 34-year-old Waterford man, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release

At about 1:40 a.m., Engine 28, Engine 27 and Battalion Chief 5 responded to a car wrapped around a power pole. The CHP got its call shortly after 2 a.m.

The CHP preliminary investigation found the driver of a 2012 Audi sedan was southbound in the “slow lane” of South Yosemite when he veered left into the northbound lanes. He continued onto the raised concrete curb before hitting the Pacific Gas & Electric pole.

The driver was alone in the car and was wearing his seat belt. It is not yet known if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash, the release says. It makes no mention of speed or efforts to brake.

Crews attempted to pull out the driver for about 20 minutes. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, according to MFD’s incident summary report.

The driver had not been identified by The Modesto Bee as of Sunday morning. The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office does not release the names of people who have died until next-of-kin has been notified.

PG&E was called out to stabilize the pole because it had been “sheered off.”
