One killed in 3-vehicle crash on NC 87

Apr. 23—A three-vehicle crash on N.C. 87 near Frank Wicker Road on Saturday claimed the life of a Chapel Hill resident, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

The wreck near Carolina Trace was reported at 11:09 p.m., according to preliminary information provided by investigating Trooper C. Gaster.

Lucas Crump, 25, of Sanford, who was driving a GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle, was traveling north on N.C. 87 when the SUV crossed into the southbound lane, the report said.

The SUV collided head-on with a Ford Escape sport utility vehicle driven by 32-year-old Davis Anugo before sideswiping a northbound 2012 Nissan Versa driven by Leslie Gomez, 20, of Sanford. The GMC Yukon then rolled over, coming to rest in the southbound lanes.

Anugo was pronounced dead at the scene, Gaster's report indicated.

Crump and a passenger in his vehicle were taken to a medical care facility to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the report. Gomez was not injured.

The report did not indicate why Crump's vehicle crossed the center line. Gaster was scheduled to meet Monday with District Attorney Suzanne Matthews regarding any charges.
