How One Couple Is Bringing Their House on a Cross-Country Road Trip

Step one: build a house.

Have a yearning to drive across the country, but don’t want to rely on a different hotel every night or an RV? You could join the social media-born #vanlife movement and suit up your own VW bus... or you could just build a house to take on the road.

That’s what one Ohio couple is doing. According to IndeOnline.com, Amy Buckley and Dylan Pierce, both 27, are satisfying their thirsts for adventure (and home ownership) by building their own tiny house to live in while they travel across the United States.

The idea took hold last summer, when the couple moved from Philadelphia to Ohio and bought a 240-square-foot foundation. The $15,000 shell was attached to a trailer, and every weekend, they worked to make it more like an actual house. They added a roof, vinyl and cedar siding, windows, and insulation; then wires, pipes, an oven, toilet, water heater, and cabinets. The final result is roomier than expected with a first-floor kitchen area and a bedroom loft.

This actually isn’t the first time the couple has been in the news for their unconventional home improvement projects. In 2015, Pierce, a software engineer, built Buckley a smart mirror that displays compliments (“you look especially amazing today” is one) as well as the date, time, and weather forecast. The mirror is already hanging in the bathroom of the mobile home.

Buckley and Pierce are set to embark on their trip in October. The first stop will be Georgia, and they’ll plan to move to a new place every three months. A mobile home still qualifies as a camper, so they’ll park their property at campgrounds across the country.

If living in a tiny home is the secret to the ultimate road trip, it might be time to start packing your bags.
