Olathe daycare license suspended for potential threats to child safety

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) issued an Emergency Order of Suspension to Charlotte P. Kauffman Daycare Home in Olathe, Kansas on Tuesday.

Located at 14633 West 151st Terrace, near Black Bob Park, the emergency suspension was issued because the secretary of the KDHE believed there were potential threats to the health, safety and protection of children in the home.

Specifically, the suspension says it is to protect any child from “physical or mental abuse, abandonment, or any other substantial threat to health or safety.”

Kansas Fire Inspection Codes were also violated, according to the suspension. The document says the Kansas State Fire Marshal found noncompliant rescue windows and the excessive storage of combustible materials at the home-converted daycare.

This report comes days after an Overland Park daycare worker was accused and recorded on video by a staff member of allegedly physically abusing a three-year-old child.

According to the Kiddi Kollege daycare, where the incident took place, the health department was notified and it had the employee, Alyssa Cook, self-report to the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF). They also said a police officer came out to the scene, looked at everything, and left.

Overland Park police and the DCF are still investigating, and no charges have been filed in this alleged incident. Cook is reported to no longer work at the daycare.

As for the Olathe case, the Secretary ordered an immediate suspension of the Licensee’s license — the person running the daycare home — which prohibits them from caring for children. This suspension is in effect if and when another order repeals it.
