Ohio man who stabbed sister to death in May 2023 sentenced to prison

A man who fatally stabbed his sister at a Hilltop home will spend at least 11 years in prison.

Michael Wright, 70, entered a guilty plea Monday to a charge of voluntary manslaughter in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

Wright had been charged with murder in the May 7, 2023, fatal stabbing of his 66-year-old sister, Rhonda James.

Around 9:55 p.m. that night, Columbus police got a phone call about a stabbing at a home on the 1900 block of Vaughn Street. When officers arrived, they found James with multiple stab wounds. She died at the scene.

Wright was found a short distance away and was taken into custody.

As part of a plea deal in the case, Judge Kim Brown ordered Wright to serve at least 11 years, but no more than 16 ½ years in prison. As part of the deal, Wright agreed to not ask for judicial, or early, release from his sentence.

Wright had been scheduled to go to trial on Monday, one of four homicide trials that had been scheduled to begin.
