Officials identify shoplifting suspect shot and wounded by Glendale police as Gohan Kancab

Officials identified a man who was shot and wounded by a Glendale police officer on Sunday.

The man was identified by police as 26-year-old Gohan Kancab, officials said Monday.

Police said just after 3:30 p.m., officers responded to North 51st and West Myrtle avenues for a report of a shoplifting incident. While officers were on their way, police said they received word the suspect had a gun and was waving it around as he left the store.

An officer found Kancab near a bus stop and gave him commands, according to police. Police said Kancab then pointed a simulated firearm in the officer's direction, and the officer fired multiple times at him.

Kancab was struck in the left shoulder, and officers gave him medical aid. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Kancab was booked into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault with a simulated weapon, aggravated assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct involving weapons and shoplifting, according to police.

The simulated weapon was identified as a lighter, police said.

A spokesperson for Glendale Police Department said the agency defines a simulated firearm as "an imitation of a firearm that could cause someone to believe the possessor is capable of using deadly force."

No officers or citizens were injured, and the officer was wearing a body camera that recorded the incident, according to police. Surprise Police Department is leading the investigation.
