Officials hold groundbreaking for Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office Ghent Detachment

GHENT, WV (WVNS) — A new Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office is on the way to the southern part of the county.

On Monday morning, officials broke ground on land directly adjacent to Ghent Elementary School.

Raleigh County Sheriff Jim Canaday said on Monday, April 8, 2024, that the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office Ghent Detachment will offer both tax services and police protection, identical to services offered at the county’s first satellite station in Glen Daniel.

“You can come in here and pay your taxes or pay your assessors’ tickets or whatever you need to do, you’ll be able to do that here,” Sheriff Canaday said. “So, as I say, it’s going to be a functional detachment, kind of similar to the one we’ve got in Glen Daniel. We really learned a whole lot with the reception we got in Glen Daniel, and we’re really glad to bring something like this to this end of the county.

Dr. Serena Starcher, superintendent of Raleigh County Schools, said the school district is happy to partner with the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office in Ghent.

She said Ghent could be just the first step to extending police presence and school safety in the district.

Dr. Starcher said Sheriff Canaday is interested in bringing a satellite office to another Raleigh County School in the near future.

“What we’re currently looking at, is, potentially, having a detachment at Clear Fork Elementary School,” said Dr. Starcher, referring to a remote elementary school in a more rural region of the school district. “Clear Fork is very remote in terms of the other schools in Raleigh County. We’re excited about that opportunity and hope we can make that dream a reality.”
