Official: Crawford County smoke mistaken for tornado

CRWAFORD COUNTY, Mo. – Cameras have spotted activity in a tornado-warned area that initially looked as if it could resemble a tornado, but instead turned out to be smoke.

Around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, a camera from MoDOT captured movement near Cuba, Missouri. At the time, there was at least one tornado warning nearby in Crawford and Franklin counties near Sullivan.

FOX 2 checked with a local park ranger in the area, who tells us the movement was smoke rather than that of tornadic activity.

Expect tornado-warned storms in the St. Louis region through the late afternoon hours on Wednesday in the St. Louis metro. Stay alert for weather updates. We will update as more information becomes available.

CORRECTION: FOX 2 initially reported the sighting on camera was a possible tornado until an official confirmed it was smoke.
