Officer, suspect injured after shooting outside Hickory pub: Police

HICKORY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A police officer and a suspect are recovering from gunshot wounds after shots were fired near a pub early Sunday morning, according to the Hickory Police Department.

Just before 2 a.m. on Sunday, officers responded to multiple shots coming from the area of Gateway Pub at 534 Highway 70 Southwest.

When they arrived, they attempted to arrest an armed man and take him into custody. While detaining the man, a second armed man shot at officers, officials said. One officer was struck twice by the suspect.

Police say an assisting officer reacted and discharged their firearm, striking the suspect.

The injured officer was taken to a local hospital where they are expected to recover. The injured suspect was flown to a different medical center where they remain in critical condition.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation by the NCSBI, officials said.

The Hickory Police Department is investigating the initial shooting at Gateway Pub. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hickory Police Department Criminal Investigations Division.
