Off-duty police officer stops stabbing on South Main Street in Hope Mills

A homeless man was arrested Friday in Hope Mills after an off-duty officer reportedly prevented him from continuing to stab a man in the head, court records show.

James Edward McIntyre, 64, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault causing serious bodily injury, possession of methamphetamines and possession of drug paraphernalia in an incident at the 4000 block of South Main Street.

According to the Hope Mills Police Department arrest warrant, Officer I. Cortese witnessed the attack at about 2 p.m. and was able to disarm the assailant, who was holding a bloody knife, the warrant states.

Security footage from a nearby laundromat allegedly showed McIntyre walking toward Horne and pulling a knife out of his pocket, according to court records.
