ODNR planting a tree in each county to celebrate its 75th anniversary

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – 88 new trees will be growing across the state this spring thanks to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the ODNR will plant a tree in each Ohio county. Most of the trees will be planted this month, leading up to Arbor Day on April 26.

The hardwood trees are native to Ohio — including oak, maple and sycamore. The trees will be sapling-size and marked with an ODNR 75th anniversary commemorative sign.

Before Europeans settled in Ohio, about 95% of the state was covered by forests. Ohio reached a low of 10% forest-cover at the turn of the century, but since then, the state has rebounded to about 30% forest cover.

The ODNR said its conservation efforts are a big part of that rebound.
