Oconee Blotter: Couple needed to ask chat app what to do when they saw blue lights in the rear view

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

METH SEIZED: On April 6, Deputy Dustin Mines was traveling north on South Burson Avenue in Bogart when he received an alert that a Mercedes was traveling on Atlanta Highway and the driver was wanted on a warrant. The deputy located the car and made a traffic stop. The driver, a 51-year-old Athens woman, was placed in custody. The deputy spotted some pieces of meth on the seat and located a folded dollar bill that also contained meth. The passenger, a 46-year-old man with a Forsyth address, was placed in custody. Another passenger,  a 46-year-old Watkinsville man, was seen throwing some cocaine out the window. He explained the other man threw it toward him after the stop, so he threw it out.  A search was made of the trunk and a safe with some meth and syringes was found. The officers located three cell phones, and $2,248 in cash. The two men were both charged with trafficking in meth.

SHOPLIFTING: On April 9, Deputy Matthew Lariscy was dispatched to Walmart, where a loss prevention officer had detained two women for shoplifting after they were seen concealing items in a backpack. The suspects, ages 24 and 45, both reside in Franklin County near Canon. They were charged with felony shoplifting because the property had more than a $500 value.

LIGHTS AND SIREN: On April 13, Deputy Ryan Buzzard and Cpl. Lex Ogan were traveling on Highway 316 when they ran the tag on a 2022 Toyota Corolla and discovered it expired last year. They pursued the car at 60 mph, but the driver never gave an indication of stopping. The officer, who had his lights and siren activated, pulled alongside the car and the driver looked at them and kept going. The deputy pulled back behind the car and it finally stopped on an exit ramp after a chase of 6 miles. The officers found a man, his wife, and infant in the car. The couple were Asians who moved to this country several years ago. The driver explained he had never been stopped before and didn’t know what to do. The man’s wife said she used her phone and asked a chat app what to do when a police car is behind you with its lights and siren operating. The app responded for her to safely pull over and stop. The 32-year-old man was taken to jail on a misdemeanor charge of attempting to elude.

CRASHED CAR: On April 12, Deputy Gregory Harrison was dispatched to a location off U.S. Highway 78 near Garrett Road for a vehicle that was crashed. The deputy observed the car crashed into some trees and the driver was outside stumbling around. The 28-year-old man smelled of alcohol, but he refused to do sobriety testing. He was charged with DUI and failing to maintain a lane.

TRAFFIC STOP: On April 13, Deputy Ryan Buzzard and Cpl. Lex Ogan were patrolling on Hog Mountain Road when they observed a car cross the yellow lane. After a traffic stop, the 46-year-old driver from Hull was asked to step out of the car, but she refused. She was asked again, but she refused again. As the deputy attempted to remove her from the car she tightly held onto the steering wheel, but eventually she was pulled out. She complained of an arm injury, so an ambulance arrived and took her to a hospital. Inside the car, the officers found syringes, a pipe and some methamphetamine. She was later charged with possession of meth and driving with a suspended license.

METH SEIZED: ON April 16, Deputy Gregory Harrison met with a 33-year-old Elberton woman who drove to the Oconee County Jail and said she wanted to make a report of terroristic threats. Cpl. Dylan Pulliam began asking her questions, but she was unable to give details of a threat, nor was she able to provide her name. A deputy went to her car to run her tag number for a possible ID, and he observed some drugs in plain view inside the car. The woman refused any medical care and was arrested for possession of meth.

SHOPLIFTERS SEEN: On April 16, Deputy Annessa Glenn was dispatched to Walmart, where two women were seen bagging merchandise without scanning the price tags. They were confronted and a 31-year-old woman was taken to jail, while a 25-year-old woman was allowed to leave as she had an infant with her. However, she was told she will be charged as well.
