NY's next solar eclipse: Did you miss the April 8 eclipse? Here's when the next few are coming
The first total eclipse over New York in 99 years will be visible Monday. It's a sight not to be missed. If you skip this one, you'll need wait over two decades just to see the next partial solar eclipse. This really is a chance of a lifetime. Parts of the Catskills and Mid Hudson Valley will see up to 95% coverage of the sun.
If you are waiting to for the next total solar eclipse to cross New York - for those of you who are still around - you will need to wait until May 1, 2079.
Monday's total solar eclipse will travel through 12 states including New York. Two others (Tennessee and Michigan) will see small parts of it. The shadow will be traveling at an average of about 2,300 miles per hour across New York state and will only take about 10 minutes, from one side of state to the other, said Dan Schneiderman, of Rochester Museum & Science Center.
The next eclipse for the US is in 2044 (visible in North Dakota and Montana). That eclipse will not be visible from New York. In 2045, New Yorkers will get a 50% partial eclipse. Compared to Monday's eclipse of 90% coverage for the Lower Hudson Valley and NYC area and 95% just north, that's much less dramatic and the reason not to miss out.
