NYC won’t provide solar eclipse glasses for students, school says

NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York City Public School students will not be getting special eclipse glasses to see the total solar eclipse on Monday, according to an email from a Manhattan school obtained by PIX11 News.

The largest school district in the United States will not provide students with solar eclipse glasses, according to the email. Instead, parents were encouraged to obtain free eclipse glasses at New York Public Library locations or Warby Parker locations.

“On Monday, April 8 the NYC area will experience a partial solar eclipse beginning at 2:00 p.m.,” the email said, in part. “The Department of Education has not provided specialized eye protection for schools for this event. We encourage all families to pick up glasses for their families [over] the next few days and to provide a pair of solar eclipse glasses for their child to be used on Monday.”

The Department of Education did not return PIX11’s request for comment.
