NWS confirms 2 more tornadoes in Kansas on Sunday

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The National Weather Service has confirmed that tornadoes touched down in Marion and Barton counties on Sunday. It had already confirmed tornadoes in Russell and Wilson counties.

Marion County

Delbert Lowe’s property in Marion County was in the storm’s path.

“We were in the house, took shelter, came out about 10 minutes later,” he said. “The barn, as you can see, is missing. We’ve got a lot of trees down. Luckily, the house is OK, and some of the other outbuildings are OK.”

He found pieces of his barn 1,000 yards east of where it used to stand.

The NWS says the tornado that hit his farm was an EF1 with a peak wind of 100 mph. It touched down at 8:16 p.m. and stayed on the ground for about a mile. It was over by 8:18 p.m. The NWS says they found swirls indicative of a tornado in the crops.

Lowe says living in Kansas means being prepared for what the weather brings.

“Have a good plan for when the storms come,” he said. “Have a plan. Have a safe place. Be aware of what’s going on and, if it does show up, put your plan in action.”

There is also storm damage in Barton County.

The NWS says a tornado hit about three miles northwest of Ellinwood. It was on the ground for 1.2 miles and had a width of 40 yards. Its peak wind is estimated at 90 mph.

The NWS says the tornado is not what damaged a home north-northeast of Ellinwood. Instead, it believes straight-line winds damaged the home.

“The tornado was given an EF-U rating because the tornado itself did not create any damage,” the NWS said.

An EF-U rating is given when there is proof of a tornado but no damage to survey and measure. The NWS says it documented the tornado through a video sent via social media.
