Number of confirmed tornadoes in Ohio Tuesday rises

Ohio (AP / WJW) — At least 11 tornadoes touched down in Ohio as severe storms barreled through the Buckeye State late Tuesday and into Wednesday.

The National Weather Service confirmed these tornadoes hit western Ohio: five in Warren County and one each in Darke, Mercer and Auglaize counties.

FOX 8 Meteorologist Mackenzie Bart confirmed Wednesday night that tornadoes also touched down in Jefferson, Clinton and Butler counties.

NWS crews are still surveying areas of southwest Ohio to determine if tornadoes struck there, as well.

In northern West Virginia, a tornado with maximum winds of about 130 mph that started early Wednesday in far eastern Ohio hit the community of Fairdale.

In Michigan, tornadoes touched down one each in Kalamazoo, Cass and Branch counties — all in the southwestern part of the state. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for four counties.

More tornadoes and severe weather killed one person in Tennessee and another in North Carolina when trees toppled onto their vehicles.

Baseball-sized hail was reported Wednesday in areas just southwest of St. Louis, Missouri.
