NRV community members discuss potential passenger rail expansion

RADFORD, Va. (WFXR)– New River Valley community members met at the Radford Community Libary about plans to expand the Amtrak passenger rail service to the area on Thursday, April 18.

During the meeting, leaders spoke about the project and developing plans to extend passenger rail services in Christiansburg. However, the eventual goal is to expand services into Radford and beyond.

As of now, the current passenger rail service ends in Roanoke.

“I realize Norfolk Southern has a lot of freight and there is a time limit they can give Amtrak,” said New River Valley resident Greg Marshall. “But if they could just work together better for the benefit of the people.”

The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority is currently assessing what infrastructure will be needed for this expansion.
