(FOX40.COM) — Following the latest election results released Tuesday, Steve Hansen announced he’s conceding in the race for Sacramento Mayor.

In a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, Hansen said he won’t be advancing in a November run off despite the race not being over with many more ballots left to be counted.

“While the results released today were not what we hoped, it is not the end of our work fighting for a better Sacramento,” Hansen said in his statement. “Thank you for believing in me and my vision for what our city could be.”

According to Tuesday’s updated results from Sacramento County, Hansen is currently fourth in the race with 21.04% of the vote but only 550 votes separated the former city council member from the second-place spot held by Kevin McCarty (21.58%).

Flojaune Cofer currently has the most votes in the mayoral race with 29.11% of the vote and has held the lead since March 12.

Hansen congratulated the race’s current top two vote-getters, although it’s not officially confirmed they’re both advancing.

“Earlier today, I reached out to Dr. Flo Cofer and Assemblymember Kevin McCarty to congratulate them on advancing to runoff and a hard fought race,” Hansen said. “I know their love for Sacramento runs deep just like mine.”

Hansen launched his mayoral campaign in May 2023 after Mayor Darrell Steinberg announced he wouldn’t seek a third term.

Prior to his mayoral campaign, Hansen served as a member of the Sacramento City Council and was the city’s first openly gay city council member.

“Please know that today isn’t the end of our story. It’s the start of a new chapter,” Hansen said. “Our city still needs your passion, hard work, and love to ensure it can be a source of creativity and opportunity for our families.”
