Highway 71 back open following KCPD standoff
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Police Department reports all lanes on northbound Highway 71 are now back open following a standoff Wednesday afternoon.
KCPD said officers were dispatched just before 2 p.m. to the 7100 block of Chestnut Avenue — about a block away from 71. The area is near 71 Highway and Gregory, but the backup is extending south toward the Grandview Triangle.
KCPD says officers were attempting to contact a wanted person when it was discovered that person was armed and barricaded the door. Officers backed out and called in a standoff.
During the standoff, the wanted person remained inside and refused to come out.
As negotiations continued, the suspect exited out a rear door and ran towards a vehicle at the residence and left in the vehicle.
Police said the suspect traveled two blocked before becoming involved in a crash with a semi-truck. The suspect was immediately taken into custody.
