North Las Vegas pipeline maintenance work causes driver woes; to continue through May

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – There is growing frustration for some drivers as pipeline maintenance work continues to take place in the area of North 5th Street and Centennial Parkway.

The why behind a sea of caution cones and lane closures comes down to the growing pains of an expanding area. City of North Las Vegas staff explained the pipeline is being lowered to make way for future developments.

The construction woes are a result of increasing the depth of Kern River Gas Transmission’s pipeline. The company, which provides service to Southwest Gas, shared that staff decided to replace the pipeline as well.

Kern River Gas coordinated with the utility company to ensure there was no impact on Southwest Gas users.

“It’s horrible. I go this way every day to get to work,” Joseph Roe who lives nearby said. “I work in Summerlin and I have to plan an extra 15 minutes to a half hour to get to work on time. It is just super inconvenient.”

Kern River and North Las Vegas city staff said the bump in the road paves the way for future improvements and the private development expansion of North 5th Street.

“It is a double-edged sword. Obviously, there is a lot of construction going on, the community is growing but why now? They should have planned for this when they first started developing,” Roe added.

Omari Nunez told 8 News Now he is sick of waiting for his turn at the light.

“I wait back there just to go at this light, and it is going to turn on me three times, and I’m stuck. Why?” Nunez questioned.

He told 8 News Now he wished the race for development came at a slower pace.

“I go to sleep, I wake up “Oh a new restaurant, oh a new building,” he said.

The City of North Las Vegas staff said the southbound side of North 5th will be closed through the end of April and work will be wrapped up by the end of May.
