Arrest made following North Avenue closure

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Grand Junction Police Department made an arrest in a shooting incident that left North Avenue closed between 19th and 23rd streets Thursday afternoon.

Grand Junction Police officers responded to a report that someone had been shot near the northwest corner of the VA hospital at about 1:15 p.m. on Thursday. The victim ran from the scene and was later found uninjured. Officers spoke with several witnesses who reported seeing a man shoot a gun at another man and then run into a nearby apartment.

Officers contacted the suspect Anthony Javalera by phone, attempting to talk to him, but he refused to come out and speak to them because he had an outstanding arrest warrant. Javalera denied having a gun and denied knowing another male in the apartment with a gun.

Crisis negotiators spoke with the suspect and GJPD SWAT was dispatched to the scene to assist. Just as SWAT was planning to deploy gas into the apartment, Javalera left the apartment and was arrested without further incident.

Anthony Javalera, 33, was arrested on the following charges:

  • Attempted first-degree assault

  • Felony menacing

  • Reckless endangerment

  • Theft (possessing a stolen firearm)

  • Possession of a weapon by a previous offender

  • Prohibited use of a weapon

  • Tampering with physical evidence

  • Obstructing a peace officer

Officials believe this to be an isolated incident with no further danger to the community. The incident is currently under investigation and there is no additional information available at this time.
