North Augusta city council to make final decision on plans for Riverside Village

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WJBF) – Monday night, the North Augusta city council will vote on proposed new development at Riverside Village. The plans include town homes and apartments and retail space.

But, this wasn’t the original plan for the development. Originally there was supposed to be office space and senior living apartments.

After push back from the community plans were amended to include an ADA compliant apartment building and retail space instead.

There will be around 270 new ADA compliant apartment units and town homes built if plans are approved. Those plans don’t differ much from the original senior living apartment. The council just removed the age restrictions.

City Councilman, Eric Presnell said some people are worried about building more apartments in North Augusta.

“When you think about apartments, you’re thinking about, oh, here some kids are graduating college, they’re moving in. That won’t be the case with these. Most of these are geared towards young professionals. Most of them are one bedroom units. So, you’re looking at medical, cyber, you know, maybe some dental, you know, whatever. Young professionals coming in.”

People living in Hammonds Ferry are concerned about the parking situation.

The city entered into a master parking agreement that would add 824 extra parking spaces to support the new apartments.

“A lot of the parcels will have parking on the parcel, but obviously it’s not enough for every unit. So we’ve had a parking agreement done that’s going to allow the residents to use, depending on which building they’re in, either the stadium deck owned by the GreenJackets or the hotel deck, which is co-owned between the city and the hotel,” explained Presnell.

Monday’s city council meeting will take place at the municipal building at 6 p.m.

The public is welcome to attend.
