Newport News mayor announces $500M initiative to help youth THRIVE

Several community members stopped by THRIVE Day on Nettles Drive to support those who are facing hardships.

The event, hosted by local non-profit THRIVE Peninsula, featured plenty of food and giveaways.

Organizers say they will use all of the proceeds from Tuesday’s event for resources to help thousands of families across the community.

In November 2023, THRIVE opened in its new location, which hosts The Market at THRIVE, the Peninsula’s first free grocery store, along with The Free Bookstore, the Garden at THRIVE and more.

THRIVE said it has provided healthy groceries, books and more to more than 12,000 people.

It took donations in person through 6 p.m. Tuesday, and is still taking donations online through midnight.
