No wolves escape after vehicle crashes through fence at Saginaw zoo

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — No animals escaped after a vehicle crashed through a fence early Friday morning at the Saginaw Children’s Zoo.

News 8 affiliate WJRT says the fence was part of the Mexican gray wolf exhibit and that no animals were hurt.

MLive reported that the crash happened at 4:14 a.m. Friday and that a responding officer used his patrol vehicle to cover the hole in the fence to prevent the animals from getting out.

“The wolves are secure and did not escape,” zoo officials said in a Facebook post. “Animal care, veterinary and maintenance staff have been on scene securing the Zoo. Thank you to our security team at STT, the Saginaw Police Department (and) Saginaw Fire Department for working efficiently, and our community for the support, concern and love. We are so thankful our precious wolves are safe.”

MLive reports the driver involved in the crash was arrested and is expected to be charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Crews were out Friday morning to repair the fence. The Saginaw Children’s Zoo still plans to hold a soft opening for the season this weekend, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
