No foolin’: OSHP cracking down on distracted drivers this week

CLEVELAND (WJW) — In honor of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is paying special attention to those drivers texting while driving.

This of course is not a new thing, as statewide distracted driving laws went into effect in October. Since then, a reported 3,575 drivers have been cited for distracted driving, according to OSHP.

But this week, Ohio troopers — along with those in five nearby states — are stepping up enforcement of these laws, starting April Fools’ Day through Monday, April 8.

They’ll be on the lookout for texters, those under 18 on their cell phones and other overall distractions.

US traffic deaths fell 3.6%, but nearly 41,000 people died

The patrol reported 28 fatal crashes last year that took place due to distracted driving, which they said was the lowest total in five years.
