oldgeekMA: In truth, the missile defense Iran is deploying is the Russian S-300PMU-3 or better known as the S-400 Area Defense System, as opposed to the Russian S-400 Regional Defense System, that is deployed in Russia.
The difference between the Area and Regional Systems, is the number of Mobile Controllers, Mobile Radars, Mobile Missile Batteries, each System can control.
The Area System is limited to 64 Mobile Controllers, controlling up to 16 Mobile Radars each, that interface to up to 32 Missile Launch Sites each, with up to 16 Batteries of 4 Types of 16 Missiles at each Battery, or up to 8,388,608 objects, at the same time.
The Regional System can control up to 8 times the number of objects or 67,108,864 objects at the same time.
These number reflect the "Maximum" numbers of objects that the Processors can possibly control, in reality the Systems are deployed with a Total Missile Package of 16 Mobile Radars controlling 1,024 X 4 Types of Missiles for both Systems.
The 4 Missile types are, Long Range Satellite Video Controlled Optically Guided(1,200 miles), Long Range Radar Guided(600 miles), Medium High Speed Mach 6.2(200 miles), and Short Range Mach 9.1(120 miles).
There are 4 other Missiles available, and any can be mixed and matched, once on the launcher and ready, the missile reports its unique code to the Main S-400 Controller which takes control.
All S-300, S-400, and the new S-500 Systems, deployed worldwide, can be remotely controlled, and can be given launch commands, from Moscow's Main Missile Defense Control Computer Consoles.
