News 19 welcomes new Evening Anchor team

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — News 19 is pleased to announce that we have hired two Alabama journalists to join our evening anchor team!

Ben Hoover and Tamika Alexander bring more than 40 years of broadcast journalism experience to the News 19 anchor desk.

The team will anchor our 5, 6, and 10 p.m. newscasts on WHNT.  They will also anchor the 9 p.m. news on WHDF!

“We could never replace Jerry Hayes, so we aren’t trying.  Fortunately, we found two talented journalists who our viewers will love. Hoover and Alexander are not just experienced in broadcasting, they are genuine people who understand the responsibility they have to everyone in North Alabama,” WHNT News Director Greg Baldwin said.

Hoover most recently served as the evening anchor for our sister station WIAT in Birmingham.  He has an impressive background, working as an anchor in several markets across the southeast.  He has been honored with awards for his reporting and anchoring.

“I am excited to make Huntsville my home and to be working for News 19, a station with a long legacy of local journalism. Telling the stories of North Alabama is an honor to me and I’m looking forward to getting out and meeting our viewers,” Hoover said.

Alexander is a Tuscaloosa native and graduated from the University of Alabama.  She is a seasoned journalist, mastering her craft at WVUA in Tuscaloosa. Alexander is an award-winning producer and has worked as a reporter and Senior Anchor.

“I am so excited to call North Alabama home. I am looking forward to meeting our viewers and sharing their stories!” Alexander said.

The schedule may be changing, but our other familiar faces aren’t going anywhere!!

Greg and Lauren will anchor the 4 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. newscast. Christine Killimayer will anchor the 7 a.m. and 8 am. on CW and the noon on News 19.

Their first day on air will be Monday, April 1.
