Newfield man faces multiple charges after probation check

NEWFIELD, N.Y. (WETM) — A Newfield man was arrested on a weapon charge and drugs charges after a probation check.

Rayquan T. Brooks, 23, was arrested on April 23 after members of the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office and the Tompkins County Probation Department say they found weapons and drugs during a probationary check. According to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and probation officers located Brooks in the parking lot of an outdoor education center at about 3:30 p.m. and searched his vehicle.

The deputies say they found methamphetamine, heroin, and pills inside of Brooks’s vehicle. Brooks was arrested and taken to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office. After the arrest, deputies and probation officers searched Brooks’s home and say they found an unlawfully possessed Springfield AR-15 rifle with a loaded 30-round high-capacity magazine.

Brooks, who is currently on probation for second-degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon (a class D felony), was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon (a class C felony), third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a class B felony), fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a class D felony), and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a class A misdemeanor).

Brooks was held for an arraignment before being taken to the Tompkins County Jail. He is currently being held without bail.
