Newburgh city police chief named school district's director of safety and security

NEWBURGH - City Police Chief Anthony Geraci has taken on a new job as director of safety and security for the Newburgh school district.

The Newburgh school board named Geraci to that post at a special meeting Friday afternoon.

Geraci's appointment was approved by a vote of 6-3. The board's president John Doerre, vice president Mark Levinstein and members Ray Burgarelli, Letitia Politi, William Walker and Dennis Grant voted in favor of the appointment, while members Philip Howard, Carole Mineo and Ray Harvey were opposed.

Geraci will be paid $175,000 a year.

Superintendent of Schools Jackielyn Manning Campbell welcomed Geraci to his new post.

"We have had the pleasure of collaborating with Mr. Geraci in his role as chief of police for the City of Newburgh over the past several years," Campbell said in a statement posted to the district's website Friday evening. "Please join me in welcoming Mr. Geraci to our Goldback family!"

Geraci's departure from the city payroll will not leave the police department leaderless. The department has had a two-tiered leadership system since August 2021, when Geraci and Police Commissioner Jose Gomerez were appointed at the same time.
