NEENAH, Wis. (WFRV) – With Easter one week away, a Neenah church hosted their Palm Sunday service that started with a donkey walk.

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church hosted its annual Palm/Passion Sunday Donkey Walk. Churchgoers followed behind two donkeys as they walked around the church, waving palm branches. The holiday commemorates when Jesus rode on a donkey through Jerusalem.

Pastor Jon Strasman says, “When people waved palms in a processional, they were hoping for liberation, for peace. There’s a lot going on in our world that is not so good, and Jesus coming humbly on a donkey is an affront to power.”

This holiday also gives kids an opportunity to be active in the church.

Neenah father-of-three Wil Heinz says, “[My kids] had fun seeing the donkeys, petting them at the end and experiencing it all, realizing the special moment and the importance of church.”

Strasman added, “When I was a kid, Palm Sunday was the most memorable worship for me because I was active. I got to do something outside. For kids to come and feel a part of worship, feel a part of the church it’ll hopefully create a base for the rest of their lives to follow Christ.”

After the walk, the church held their Palm Sunday service and a pancake breakfast.
