NC bakery named semifinalist for most ‘Outstanding Bakery’

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — In the culinary world, a James Beard award is the highest honor, like a Grammy for musicians.

A Winston-Salem bakery is a semi-finalist for a James Beard award.

Bobby Boy Bakeshop in Winston-Salem is one of just twenty bakeries vying for the honor of being the most “Outstanding Bakery.”

Ever since the semi-finalists were announced, business surged as the small shop.

Foodie Shannon Smith shows us what makes this bakery so special and how they are keeping up with the demand.

John and Lucia Bobby opened the shop in 2019.

“I think we always have had our standards set in a way that we can be proud daily, which is what we wanted to achieve, and I think our team is really good at doing that, but it always gives you that extra bump in morale when you have other people recognizing that and putting it out on such a big platform, so I think it would make us even more proud of what we do daily,” said Lucia Bobby.

Bobby Boy Bakeshop uses a slow and thoughtful baking process with naturally-leavened sourdoughs, croissants and danishes made with a French technique and entremets and cakes.

They also serve artisan sandwiches and coffee. Most of their bakes are a three-day process which they feel sets them apart from other local spots.

They will learn on April 3 if they are finalists.

Bobby Boy Bakeshop is located at 1100 Reynolda Road and is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.

Bobby Boy Bakeshop isn’t the only Carolina restaurant vying for a James Beard award. The co-owners of Jimmy Pearls in Charlotte are semifinalists for Best Chef: Southeast.
