Tornado watch canceled early in south Twin Cities metro

The "particularly dangerous" tornado watch was canceled early Tuesday evening in most affected areas of Minnesota, but some areas including Rochester still have the alert active.

The Weather Service issued its tornado watch a little after 1 p.m., also designating it as a "particularly dangerous situation," which is fairly rare for the region.

It was supposed to be in effect until 9 p.m. for most of southeast Minnesota, but the Weather Service ended it early in much of Minnesota a little before 6:30 p.m., according to a social media post. Seven counties in far southeast Minnesota were still under the watch just before 7 p.m.

It's also active in Iowa, northwest Illinois and western Wisconsin, as part of the tornado watch that is covering a large swath of the upper Midwest.

Later Tuesday, a tornado warning was issued for the areas around Red Wing, Cannon Falls and Bay City, Wis., until 6 p.m., when it expired.
