National Weather Service says EF3 tornado struck Westmoreland

TOPEKA (KSNT) — The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed one of the tornados that hit northeast Kansas was an EF3.

The deadly tornado that hit the town of Westmoreland now has an official rating. The NWS confirmed to 27 News that the tornado is rated as an EF3. The path length of that tornado was 2.5 miles long, with wind speeds at 130-140 miles per hour. According to the NWS, The tornado touched down at 4:40 p.m., and was finished at 4:48 p.m. There were three injured residents and one woman was found dead after the Westmoreland tornado.

Two other tornadoes hit northeast Kansas counties Tuesday afternoon. The NWS said a tornado went through Nemaha County from 5:02 p.m. until 5:16 p.m. It was rated an EF1 with wind speeds peaking at 110 miles per hour and the path length was about 3.5 miles.

According to the NWS, another EF1 tornado was recorded in Williamstown in Jefferson County. The tornado was active from 6:57 p.m. until 7:03 p.m. with peak wind speeds at 107 miles per hour and a path length of almost two miles.
