National Weather Service issues ‘Red Flag Warning’ for Southwest & Central Virginia

VIRGINIA (WFXR) – As wildfires have been raging across the state, including a 75-acre fire on 12 O’Clock Knob Road in Roanoke County, the National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Red Flag Warning for parts of Southwest and Central Virginia along and east of the Blue Ridge. On Wednesday, March 20.

From 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., strong winds and low relative humidity will create optimal dry conditions in the area and increase the chances for fires to start and spread.

Wind gusts can reach 40-45 mph with a relative humidity of as low as 20%.

Fire at Twelve O’Clock Knob Road burns 75 acres, 80% contained

There is currently a burn ban for all open fires in effect in Roanoke County, including recreational fires until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22.

The affected areas include Alleghany County, Amherst County, Appomattox County, Bath County, Bedford County, Botetourt County, Campbell County, Central Virginia Blue Ridge, Charlotte County, Craig County, Eastern Highland County, Western Highland County, Franklin County, Halifax County, Henry County, Patric County, Pittsylvania County, and Roanoke County, Rockbridge County.
