CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) – This week is National Salvation Army Week, and the Salvation Army of Corning is hosting a few celebrations to kick the week off, as well as celebrate its 140th anniversary.

Then on Friday, The Salvation Army will be handing out donuts at the Centerway Square in the Gaffer District to recognize the Salvation Army Donut Lassies who served soldiers donuts during World War I.

National Salvation Army Week is recognized on the second full week of May and was first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 in the United States.

For the future, the organization will host a community chicken barbeque on Sept. 8 and the annual Red Kettle Campaign will begin in November.
