National Peace Officers Memorial Day honored in NE Ohio

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio (WJW) – It’s National Peace Officers Memorial Day and our men and women in blue are being honored across the country.

This year’s observation is extra heartbreaking after the death of Euclid Officer Jacob Derbin.

Cuyahoga Falls and Silver Lake joined together Wednesday to remember three officers who have died in the line of duty over more than a century, along with others who have sacrificed in service to the community and our country.

The memorial bears the names of officers Ira Goldwood, Clarence Chance and Charles Case, dating back to the early 1900s.

This community also remembers those who have died after decades of service, those who have been police officers locally and who have died while serving in the armed forces.

Ceremonies like this one are taking place across the state of Ohio on Wednesday and throughout the week, remembering hundreds of officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

“Most people do not think about law enforcement officers day to day. Most people don’t have interaction with them day to day, but when a tragedy occurs like what we just had in Euclid last weekend, people come around and you realize its great from a law enforcement standpoint for officers to know that people do actually care about what they do,” President of the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police Gary Wolske said Wednesday.

The father of Justin Winebrenner, an Akron officer who was killed in 2014, as well as family members of three other officers whose names were added to the memorial, were in attendance for the memorial.

The city of Cuyahoga Falls prides itself on having the most police memorial flags in the country.
