National Agriculture Week: Meet a Cumberland County dairy farmer

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) — Pennsylvania is home to over 52,000 farm families that support 1 in 10 jobs in our state alone.

This National Agriculture Week abc27 highlights Destiny Dairy in Carlisle, Cumberland County, where you can not only see and snuggle animals but also get a look at where your food comes from.

Changes proposed for Pennsylvania motorcycle inspections

With $7.8 billion in cash receipts generated statewide from production agriculture alone each year, Amy Brickner, owner of Destiny Dairy Bar and Farm says she sees the economic importance of the industry first-hand.

“It’s really important for me to continue our history of farming for producing local safe wholesome agriculture products, everything from milk to beef,” Brickner said.

Brickner says all local farms and agribusinesses are a leading economic driver in our state, including hers.

“When we make money we spend it right in the community, and it ends up increasing every dollar we spend by two and a half times for the Pennsylvania economy,” she said.

Brickner says it’s one thing to milk the cows, but then to communicate to the public how it gets into their hands are the types of interactions she wants on her farm

“People understandably are disconnected from where their food comes from and what I really wanted to do was have an open transparent place.”

With goats, cows, pigs, and a full storefront, Brickner says people can come to her and tell them what they want locally.

“Farmers want to come out and talk, and say hey what do you want, we want to give it to you,” she said.

As a longtime dairy farmer, she is also happy to show visitors the process.

“To be able to still be able to farm with our family, and with the community that we love and I’ve grown up in is really important to me.”
