Nashville area could see severe thunderstorms, damaging wind and hail Tuesday

Rain continues across Middle Tennessee this week. On Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of Middle Tennessee including Nashville and parts of Alabama and Mississippi.

The weather service is warning of frequent lighting, isolated wind gusts up to 60 mph and ping pong-sized hail. The watch is in place until 8 p.m.

On Tuesday morning, the weather service said the area faced a slight risk for severe weather as a line of thunderstorms is expected to move through, bringing along the chance for strong to potentially severe storms. The main threats will be hail and damaging winds. Hail reaching up to one inch could be possible, said the weather service.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected Tuesday afternoon and throughout the evening. On Wednesday, storms are expected to pick up. The weather service is warning of gusty winds, hail and locally heavy rain.

The weather service also issued a flood warning for western areas of Middle Tennessee, specifically the Tennessee River at Johnsonville. The flood warning is in effect until early Thursday morning, said the weather service.
