A mysterious cross popped up on a hill above Cal Poly. Will the university take it down?

A mysterious cross recently appeared in the hills above Cal Poly — but university officials don’t know where it came from.

The wooden cross was installed at the top of Hudson Hill, which is university-owned property behind Poly Canyon Village.

On Tuesday, university spokesperson Keegan Koberl told The Tribune “the cross wasn’t put up by the university, and we haven’t been able to confirm who may have put it up.”

On Friday, the cross could be seen from the Poly Canyon Village apartments next to a longtime seesaw structure that sits at the top of the hill.

A trail leading up to the top of the hill is accessible from the Architecture Graveyard.

Koberl said to his knowledge there was no policy that would prohibit the cross from being allowed on university property and that there were no plans to remove it at this time.
