Myrtle Beach man sentenced to 45 years in prison for 2020 murder in Forestbrook area

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Myrtle Beach man was sentenced to 45 years in prison on Thursday for shooting and killing a man in the Forestbrook area in August 2020, the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office said.

A jury found Craig L. Legette, 41, guilty of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime on Thursday following a trial that began Monday in Horry County Circuit Court.

Legette shot Kentrell Ferguson in the back and in the foot as he was leaving an apartment at the Fountain Point Apartments near Clay Pond Road, the solicitor’s office said. Ferguson was found in his vehicle near the apartments and died as a result of the injuries. The incident was captured on video surveillance.

Judge Donald Hocker sentenced Legette to 45 years in prison for the murder charge and five years for the weapons charge, but the sentences will run concurrently. Murder is a charge that is not eligible for parole or early release, so Legette will have to serve 45 years before he is eligible to be released, the solicitor’s office said.

“We appreciate this jury holding the defendant accountable for his actions,” Assistant Solicitor Seth Oskins said. “That is what it takes to keep our communities safe. This was clearly a murder as the victim was 20 feet away from the defendant when he was shot. He ran for his life and unfortunately did not survive his injuries. The verdict and sentence have provided Mr. Ferguson’s family a well-deserved feeling of justice. Further, our county is safer now with Mr. Legette behind bars.”
