“The Consumers Energy Foundation is squarely focused on ensuring Michiganders continue to have access to world-class natural resources,” Consumers Energy Foundation President Brandon Hofmeister said in a statement. “This year’s Planet Award winners will not only protect and preserve those resources but restore ones that were otherwise considered lost. Their work will have significant and long-term benefits for Muskegon and Macomb counties, and we look forward to seeing their projects in action.”

Dune Harbor Park is the largest and newest park in Muskegon County — having opened in 2022.

The Parks Department will use the grant money to restore the traditional ecosystem there, planting native foliage to help local pollinators and remove invasive plants. Funding will also be used to continue to develop the park’s trail system and signage.

Dune Harbor Park covers 377 acres of land, including two inland lakes, several miles of trails and 1,660 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline.

A Muskegon County Park Pass is required to use the park. Day passes and season passes can both be purchased at a self-serve kiosk at each parking lot. Day passes cost $5. Season passes, which cover an entire calendar year, cost $20. Season passes can also be purchased at the Muskegon Visitor’s Center, Pioneer Park and Norton Shores City Hall.
