Muncie man in police chase, fatal crash is released from hospital, booked into jail

MUNCIE, Ind. — A Muncie man accused of leading a Henry County sheriff's deputy on a car chase that ended in a fatal crash has been transferred from IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital to the Delaware County Jail.

Zacrey Kane Antrim, 28 — also listed in court documents at an address in Van Buren in Grant County — is preliminarily charged with resisting law enforcement resulting in death, resisting law enforcement resulting in serous bodily injury, criminal recklessness, disregarding traffic control devices and reckless driving.

Antrim — injured in the Thursday crash at McGalliard Road and Tillotson Avenue that killed his passenger, 25-year-old Nicholas Wayne Woolum of Muncie — was transferred from the hospital to the jail on Sunday. He continued to be held Monday under a $60,000 cash bond.

According to affidavits prepared by Muncie and Indiana State Police, Antrim — driving a Dodge Dart — drew the attention of an off-duty Henry County sheriff's deputy, Tanner Strelecky, about 6 a.m. Thursday as they both traveled in the northbound lanes of Ind. 3 in northern Henry County.

Strelecky, who had just completed a work shift, was in uniform and driving his marked sheriff's vehicle when he saw Antrim commit traffic violations that led him to believe the driver might be impaired, the documents said.

The deputy tried to stop the Dart near the Henry-Delaware County line, but a chase ensued, eventually reaching Muncie "on city streets at speeds of 70-100 miles per hour, from the south side of Muncie, through downtown to the west side of the city, before traveling up to the northwest side, and eventually turning east on McGalliard Road," according to the ISP report.

The crash, about 6:15 a.m., took placed at McGalliard's intersection with Tillotson when Antrim "swerved into the left turn lane to go around vehicles stopped at the light."

Antrim ran a red light and crashed into a northbound Jeep Wrangler, killing Woolum and seriously injuring the Jeep's driver, Shanta Sharrel Schmiesing, 38, of Muncie, according to the affidavit written by a Muncie officer.

Schmiesing was reported to be in critical condition following the crash. He was taken to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital and later transferred to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

The Delaware County prosecutor's office will determine what formal charges will be filed as a result of Thursday's events.

Antrim was convicted of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, intimidation and possession of a narcotic drug last September in Grant Superior Court 1.

His sentence in that case apparently placed him on probation for more than seven years. His probation in the Grant County case was later transferred to Delaware County.
