GRPD: Car catches fire in US-131 crash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A two-car crash temporarily closed northbound US-131 near Wealthy Street for more than an hour Sunday morning.

The Grand Rapids Police Department said it happened around 7:20 a.m. Both vehicles were traveling northbound on US-131 when an SUV rear-ended a sedan. The crash caused the SUV to flip over. The sedan caught fire, and was engulfed when first responders arrived.

Reminder: NB US-131 to close Sunday

Police say everyone was safely removed from both vehicles. The SUV had five people inside, including a 1-year-old child. The child was not injured and two people from that vehicle were transported for medical care. The driver of the sedan had minor injuries and was transported for medical evaluation.

The driver of the SUV was taken into custody on suspected operating while intoxicated. Police believe both alcohol and speed were a factor in the crash. Inside the sedan, officers say they found 200 rounds of unfired ammunition.

While police were clearing that scene, another two-car crash happened nearby, causing police to close down northbound US-131 at Franklin Street SE.

No injuries were reported in the second crash. The freeway reopened around 9 a.m.
