Multiple rounds of severe storms likely through the next few days

Widespread showers and storms are expected to move through the area during the morning and afternoon today. While there’s a chance a cell or two may get strong enough to have hail up to the size of quarters in them this morning, most of the storms through early afternoon aren’t expected to be severe. Highs today will most likely stay in the 60s as our southeasterly winds start picking up.

Another round of storms look to develop later this afternoon and evening out in western Kansas that may end up moving into our area later tonight. Some of those may end up being strong or severe with damaging wind gusts and large hail being the main threats for the western half of our area overnight.

We’ll have another chance for storms Friday afternoon and evening as the upper level system continues to move eastward. We’ll also see very strong winds, without the storms, as this system passes through. Wind gusts for Friday through Sunday will likely be on the order of 40-45 mph.

The best chance to see storms redevelop in the afternoon Friday will be in the northeastern corner of our area and into northwestern Missouri. All modes of severe weather will be possible with this activity, including a threat for a few tornadoes.

Additional rounds of storms are also possible for Saturday and Sunday afternoon/evening hours. There are some indications that the strongest storms may occur on Saturday. Once again, all types of severe weather appear to be possible Saturday evening, but with multiple rounds of storms likely before that arrives, we’ll be fine tuning that in the coming days.

Moral of the story: make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings in the coming days, and pay attention to weather updates between now and Sunday.
