Multiple fire departments tackle grass fire in Carterville

CARTERVILLE, Mo. — More than five fire departments responded to a grass fire in Carterville Monday afternoon.

It started just after 3:00 p.m., according to Carterville Fire Chief, Kevin Crawford, and consumed the equivalent of five city blocks, of a field at the end of West McKee Street, which is just off of North Fountain Street.

Duenweg, Webb City, Oronogo, Carl Junction, Tri-Cities, and Carterville fire departments all reported to the scene.

No personal property was damaged – with the cause of the fire, still undetermined.

“We got thorns and trees and everything else catching on fire in there, there is a lot of fuel in there, so it’s catching and going fast. The wind isn’t helping us any, if at all, so we are just in there having to walk through and put it out with our hands, tools, and camo-packs,” said Kevin Crawford, Carterville Fire Chief.

The grass fire was contained as of around 5:30 p.m.

The Carterville Fire Chief says it’s the time of year when grass fires are prevalent – and reminds us to be mindful of burning or any open flames.
